There's no single answer — the right interval depends on your home, your lifestyle, and the season. But running your system with a dirty filter is the fastest way to cause breakdowns, high bills, and poor air quality. Here's a practical guide.
Why Filter Changes Matter So Much in the Mountains
The High Country has long, demanding heating seasons. Your furnace or heat pump runs for months straight, pulling air through that filter constantly. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which forces your system to work harder, raises your energy bills, and can even cause your heat pump to freeze up or your furnace to short cycle. In short: up here, filter changes matter more than in milder climates.
General Guidelines by Home Type
- No pets, no allergies: Every 2–3 months
- One pet: Every 60 days
- Multiple pets or allergies: Every 30–45 days

Seasonal Considerations for the High Country
Winter (heating season): Your system runs nearly constantly from November through March. Check your filter monthly during winter and replace it as soon as it looks dirty. This is the #1 way to prevent mid-winter breakdowns.
Summer: Cooling loads are lighter at our elevation, but pollen, dust, and wildfire smoke can load filters quickly. Check monthly.

How to Check Your HVAC Filter
